The 4 Core Wounds of Humanity and How to Heal Them

What is a core wound?

A core wound refers to a deep emotional imprint that can impact a person's sense of self, psychology and overall well-being. These wounds are generally created from childhood trauma and can shape the way a person thinks about themselves and their perception of the world around them. Core wounds are the underlying source of negative patterns, fears, beliefs and behaviors that inhibit our growth and relationships.

How is a core wound formed?

Here are some of the most common ways a core wound is formed:

  • Abuse: This can include physical, emotional, sexual, or psychological abuse

  • Attachment disruptions: This can include inconsistent or unresponsive caregiving, separation from primary caregivers, or disruptions in the attachment process.

  • Emotional deprivation: This can include a lack of affection, emotional support, or attention from primary caregivers.

  • Family dysfunction: This can include exposure to substance abuse, domestic violence or mental illness.

  • Cultural or societal factors: This can include exposure to toxic cultural beliefs, stereotypes, or discrimination.

The 4 core wounds of humanity

  1. Abandonment - one of the most universal wounds and fears of humanity. The abandonment wound refers to a type of emotional trauma that occurs when a person experiences feelings of neglect, loss or separation from parents, caregivers or even from Source.

  2. Rejection - this is one of the most ancient and primal fears embedded within the DNA of humans. Our need to belong, connect and be accepted is rooted in human evolution and if not met, we will feel rejection at some level of our being. This wound is often a result of a child who was was judged, shamed or reprimanded for their authentic and emotional expression.

  3. Guilt - the core wound of guilt is often referred to as the feeling of self-reproach or self-blame that arises when from regret of the past or an act that one has committed that failed to meet one's own moral standards.

  4. Shame - unlike guilt, which focuses on specific actions, shame is often the result of guilt and can create a sense of worthlessness and self-loathing. People who experience shame may withdraw from others, feel embarrassed, or try to hide their perceived flaws.
